No Carmina Gadelica invocation specifically naming *Acorus calamus* has been identified. Calamus has, however, acquired a long-standing association with wetlands, sweet fragrance, purification and medicinal root traditions in several cultures.

Calamus is a perennial wetland plant characterized by long, sword-shaped leaves and a strongly aromatic rhizome. It grows along marshes, pond margins, shallow waters and other wet habitats throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere. Natural Resources Canada records *Acorus calamus* across Canadian hardiness zones 2a–7b.
The aromatic rhizome has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha, Chinese and other traditional medical systems. Historically it was regarded principally as a digestive, aromatic, stimulating and nervous-system remedy. Modern pharmacological research has identified numerous potentially active constituents, particularly the phenylpropenes α-asarone and β-asarone.
