**Catch phrase (Carmina Gadelica or traditional invocation if available):**
No invocation is recorded in the *Carmina Gadelica*. Lion's mane has no native Gaelic traditional name or Celtic medicinal tradition. A fitting modern poetic epithet is **“The White Mane of the Elder Tree”**, reflecting its cascading, icicle-like fruiting body and its traditional association with aged hardwood.

**Brief introduction:**
Lion's mane is a distinctive edible medicinal mushroom characterized by a single, rounded white fruiting body covered in long, cascading spines. It grows naturally on dead or dying hardwood, particularly broadleaf trees, and is distributed throughout parts of Europe, Asia and North America. It is a wood-decaying fungus rather than a plant, but is included here because traditional herbal and modern medicinal-mushroom practice commonly treats it alongside botanical medicines.

The mushroom has a particularly strong history in East Asian food and traditional medicine. It has been used as food and medicinal material in China, Japan and other parts of East Asia, where it has been associated particularly with the **digestive system and general nourishment**.

Modern interest in lion's mane has focused heavily on its possible effects on the **nervous system and cognition**, particularly because certain compounds appear capable of stimulating pathways involved in nerve growth. Human clinical research is promising but remains relatively small.

  * **Habitat:** Naturally grows on dead, dying or injured hardwood, particularly beech, oak, maple, walnut and other broadleaf trees.
  * **Propagation/cultivation notes:** Commercial cultivation commonly uses sterilized hardwood sawdust or supplemented sawdust blocks. The fungus requires high humidity, fresh-air exchange and suitable temperatures for fruiting. Outdoor cultivation can be achieved by inoculating hardwood logs, although fruiting may take considerably longer than indoor production.

* **Mild cognitive impairment:** A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial reported improvement in cognitive-function scores during supplementation with *H. erinaceus*, with the improvement diminishing after supplementation stopped. **An important note for the collection:**
Lion's mane is the point where the collection moves outside the strict botanical kingdom. It is a **fungus, not a plant**, and that distinction is worth preserving rather than hiding. In an apothecary or materia-medica tradition, however, medicinal fungi have long occupied a place alongside herbs, roots and barks.

There is also an important distinction between **fruiting-body preparations and mycelial preparations**. Much of the popular discussion of lion's mane centres on erinacines, which are particularly associated with mycelium, while hericenones are associated with the fruiting body. Commercial products can therefore differ substantially even when both are simply labelled “lion's mane.” For a serious apothecary monograph, the **species, part of the fungus, extraction method and standardization** should be recorded whenever possible.
