No specific invocation to liverwort is recorded in the *Carmina Gadelica*. The traditional name itself provides the strongest historical association: **“the liver herb.”** This name reflects the medieval Doctrine of Signatures, in which the lobed, liver-like appearance of certain thalloid liverworts was interpreted as a sign that the plant was intended for disorders of the liver.

It is particularly recognizable by the small, umbrella-like reproductive structures produced from the upper surface of the thallus.

The name “liverwort” derives from the resemblance that some species were thought to bear to the human liver. This resemblance became important in medieval European herbalism through the **Doctrine of Signatures**, which proposed that the physical form of a plant indicated the organ or condition it could treat.

Historically, liverworts were consequently associated with liver disorders, jaundice and other ailments attributed to the liver. Modern research has instead focused on the unusual chemistry of liverworts, including their distinctive **bisbibenzyls, terpenoids and phenolic compounds**.
