No specific mistletoe invocation is recorded in the *Carmina Gadelica*. Mistletoe nevertheless carries a very old European sacred symbolism associated with **life in winter, protection, fertility, peace and the threshold between earth and sky**. A suitable modern devotional rendering is: **“Green in the winter, life upon the bare branch; remain between earth and heaven, a sign of enduring life.”** This is a contemporary invocation, not a historical quotation.

Historical European names include Latin **viscum** and Greek-derived terms associated with birdlime. The name “mistletoe” derives from Old English *misteltān*, traditionally interpreted as “mistletoe” or “mistle-branch.”

European mistletoe is an evergreen, semi-parasitic plant growing in the branches of trees. Unlike ordinary terrestrial plants, it obtains water and minerals through specialized structures penetrating its host while retaining green leaves and carrying out photosynthesis itself. It produces distinctive white, translucent berries that are especially conspicuous in winter.
*Viscum album* has an extraordinary place in European folklore. Classical writers associated mistletoe with the Druids, and later European traditions connected it with protection, fertility, healing and peace. Its evergreen nature made it a powerful symbol of life persisting through winter. The historical evidence for specific Druidic practices is considerably thinner than popular modern accounts often suggest, but mistletoe's ritual importance in later European tradition is undeniable.

**Materia medica note:**
Mistletoe is one of the plants in this collection where the **traditional, symbolic and pharmacological dimensions are unusually difficult to separate**. It is an evergreen plant literally living upon another tree, producing fruit during the winter when most of the surrounding vegetation is dormant. That alone helps explain why it acquired such extraordinary symbolic significance.
The Druidic material needs particular care. **Mistletoe unquestionably has an ancient European ritual history, but the popular modern picture of Druids cutting it with a golden sickle and collecting it according to a fully preserved ritual is substantially more detailed than the surviving evidence permits us to claim.** Pliny the Elder provides the famous account of Gaulish Druids and mistletoe, but that single classical account should not be inflated into a complete reconstruction of Celtic ritual.
From a medicinal standpoint, however, mistletoe is genuinely remarkable. Its **lectins and viscotoxins are biologically active proteins rather than merely theoretical constituents**, and modern research continues to investigate their immunological and cytotoxic properties. ([PubMed][2])
For the materia medica, I would therefore classify mistletoe as a **sacred European evergreen, specialized immunomodulatory/cytotoxic medicinal plant, and high-caution botanical**. It belongs in the collection—but unlike something such as lemon balm or marshmallow, it should never be presented as an ordinary home-herbal remedy.
