**Brief introduction:**
Pygeum is the dried bark of *Prunus africana*, a large evergreen tree native to the mountainous regions of sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. The tree can become very large, with dark bark and glossy evergreen leaves, and occurs naturally in montane and Afromontane forests.

The bark has a long history of traditional medicinal use in several African regions. During the twentieth century it became particularly well known in European phytotherapy for **lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)**.

The medicinal material is unusual in that the bark, rather than the fruit or leaves, is the principal harvested part. Because excessive bark harvesting can kill the tree, *P. africana* has become an important conservation concern.
