No *Carmina Gadelica* or Gaelic invocation is recorded for Ramon Nut. Among the Maya of Mesoamerica, however, the ramón tree has a much deeper cultural identity as a **food tree of the forest**, with its seeds traditionally gathered, cooked, dried and ground.

Ramon is a large evergreen tropical tree native to Mexico, Central America and parts of the Caribbean. It is a characteristic component of tropical forests and can reach 30–45 metres in height. The tree produces small, rounded fruits containing seeds that have traditionally served as an important food resource.

The seeds are unusually nutritious, containing substantial carbohydrate, protein, fibre and minerals. They can be boiled, roasted, dried and ground into flour. Archaeological and ethnobotanical evidence indicates that ramón was an important food resource for Maya communities, particularly during periods when other staple crops were scarce.

The name **Maya Nut** is somewhat misleading botanically: the seed is not a true nut in the botanical sense. It is the edible seed of the ramón fruit.
