No *Carmina Gadelica* or Gaelic invocation is recorded for Rehmannia. In Chinese medicine, however, Rehmannia Root has a long association with **nourishment, restoration and the preservation of vital substance**. Its traditional name, **Dì Huáng (地黄)**, means "earth yellow," referring to the yellowish-brown root.

Unlike many Western herbal drugs, **Rehmannia is traditionally used in two principal forms**: raw or dried Rehmannia (*Sheng Di Huang*) and repeatedly steamed or otherwise processed Rehmannia (*Shu Di Huang*). Processing substantially alters the root's chemistry, colour, texture and traditional therapeutic classification.

Thus, the traditional insistence that **the manner in which a plant is prepared changes what medicine it becomes** has a genuine biochemical counterpart.
