No *Carmina Gadelica* or Gaelic invocation is associated with Reishi. In East Asian tradition, however, the mushroom was regarded as a plant of **longevity, vitality and spiritual cultivation**. Its Chinese name, **Língzhī (灵芝)**, is commonly translated as "mushroom of spiritual potency" or "mushroom of immortality."

**Brief introduction:**
Reishi is a woody polypore mushroom traditionally associated with East Asian medicine and longevity practices. The fruiting body is characteristically **varnished or lacquered**, with a kidney- or fan-shaped cap ranging from reddish-brown to deep mahogany and a pale to cream-coloured pore surface underneath.

Modern taxonomy has clarified that what was historically called *Ganoderma lucidum* in commercial and medicinal literature represents several closely related species. **Ganoderma lingzhi** is now generally regarded as the principal cultivated "Reishi/Lingzhi" species used in Chinese medicine, while *G. lucidum* sensu stricto is a distinct taxon associated particularly with Europe.

Reishi occupies an unusual position in traditional medicine: rather than being regarded primarily as a remedy for one disease, it was traditionally valued as a **tonic and longevity mushroom**, associated with maintaining vitality, supporting the spirit and promoting balance.

Commercial extracts can differ dramatically in concentration. A gram of a concentrated extract should **not** be assumed equivalent to a gram of dried mushroom.

Clinical evidence: preliminary to moderate and preparation-dependent.** Reishi is one of the most extensively researched medicinal mushrooms, but its reputation as a universal tonic or cancer cure goes considerably beyond what clinical evidence currently supports.

**Botanical and cultural note:**
Reishi is one of the clearest examples of a medicinal organism whose **cultural meaning became inseparable from its pharmacology**. The ancient Chinese image of the Lingzhi as a mushroom of longevity was not based upon the modern concept of a standardized active pharmaceutical ingredient. Rather, it belonged to a much broader tradition of cultivating longevity through diet, medicine, meditation and harmony with the natural world.

The modern discovery of β-glucans, triterpenoids and other bioactive constituents does not prove the ancient claim of immortality, but it does make the historical reputation interesting: Reishi genuinely contains compounds capable of interacting with the immune and inflammatory systems. The appropriate modern interpretation is therefore not **"the mushroom of immortality,"** but a medicinal fungus with unusually broad biological activity whose traditional importance considerably predates modern pharmacology.
