 High Holidays (Na Féilte Móra)

These are the great hinges of the year, when the veil between worlds thins and the sacred fire burns brightest. They are marked by bonfires, vigils, processions, and rites of passage.

  • Be’al Teine (Beltane) – The Fire of Life

  • Samhain – The Feast of the Ancestors

  • Grianstad Gheamhraidh (Winter Solstice) – The Birth of Light from Darkness

These days are usually preceded by vigils or fasts, and followed by days of rest, feasting, and offerings to gods and ancestors.

 Cross-Quarter Days (Lá na Leathránaí)

These fall between solstices and equinoxes, marking the heartbeats of each season. They are times of both ritual movement and practical preparation.

  • Be’al Teine (May 1) – Seeding and Fertility

  • Lughnasadh (August 1) – First Fruits and Games

  • Yule (Midwinter Feast, near Solstice) – Rebirth and Hearth Magic

  • Imbolg (February 1) – Purification and Awakening

Though often festive, these days may also include cleansing fasts, dedication rites, or blessings of tools and household items.

Quarter Days (Lá na Ceathair)

These are the solar pivots: Equinoxes and Solstices, known collectively as the Four Albans.

*Cothrom-la a' Chèitein or Cothrom-la an Earraich : Alban Eilir (Spring Equinox) –          Renewal and Seed

*Grianstad Samhraidh : Alban Hefin (Summer Solstice) – Light and Joy

*Cothrom-la an Fhoghair : Alban Elfed (Autumn Equinox) – Balance and Reckoning

*Grianstad Gheamhraidh : Alban Arthan (Winter Solstice) – Descent and Promise

Observed with solar rites, chanting, offerings to sun and sky deities, and meditations on balance and transformation.

 Lunar Observances (Amanna na Gealaí)

The moon's phases structure the inner calendar of the soul, especially among bardic and seer traditions.

  • Full Moon (Gealach Lán): For blessing, healing, and divination, feasts, Cahaireachd

  • New Moon (Gealach Dhubh): For beginnings, cleansing, baptisms and Ogham casts

  • Sixth Night of the Moon: Traditional gathering of mistletoe, a sacred act performed in solemnity beneath the oak, good for divination, and for pronouncements.
